A Day in the Mountains

Today, we drove NOWHERE! We stayed in Whitefish and visited Glacier National Park (well, we did have to drive there, but that doesn't really count). We arrived nice and early, just in time to see the sunrise over the mountains.

We took a shuttle bus up 6,000 feet, however, as we rose in altitude we drove right up into the clouds. We were in pea soup fog. Here's a picture of Carol about ten feet away from me:

We were going to do some hiking and sightseeing up there, but the fog was predicted to last all day, so we took the shuttle back down.  However, we did get some good views on the way up and down:

Once back at ground level, we hiked up to a lake called Avalanche Lake. It was a beautiful hike. The trail primarily ran along a stream. All along the way we were looking at mountain vistas:

At one point Carol and I came upon a small group of people pointing their cameras into the woods with hushed voices. We looked and saw one of the native fauna. It's called a whitetail deer. I failed to get a picture, which I regret because I may never see one again for the rest of my life.

And the destination of the hike was worth the effort:

After our hike, we left the park and our friends Pam and Mike hosted us for a delicious dinner that featured lots of goodies from their organic vegetable farm.

Tomorrow's morning activity: Helping them harvest their hops!! Yes, hops, my favorite fruit!

  1. What a beautiful day with so many great spots. And what a fun dinner to top it off.

  2. Looks like a blast! So jealous. One thing: I think we have lots of whitetail deer back here in PA, right?
