We're in the Rockies Now

We left Great Falls around 8:30ish today. Sadly it was raining when we left, which didn't bode well either for driving or for sightseeing. We hit a massive bank of fog early on, but as the day progressed the fog lifted, and it actually turned out to be a beautiful sunny day.

Along the drive, we were still in cattle country, and we saw a few working oil pumps (What is this? Texas??) Our drive took us across the Blackfeet Reservation, and through East Glacier.

We passed through the gap between the Lewis Range and Sawtooth Range, then drove right through the Flathead Range. At this point, we are IN the Rocky Mountains. The size of these mountains is hard to comprehend. They are just massive and go on for miles and miles. During this time, we crossed the Continental Divide.

BTW, quote of the day: "Um, there's a cow on the road...". Yes, we were driving along at fifty miles and hour and came around a turn and there is a giant black angus cow in the road. Granted, it was on the shoulder, but you still don't expect to see a cow on the road!  Seriously?

Finally, we arrived in beautiful Whitefish:

We got out of the car and walked around to stretch our legs, and lo and behold found Great Northern Brewing Company. Of course, we had to grab a flight and sit on the balcony. What a great place to enjoy some brew.

We had a chance to meet up with Carol's good high school friend Pam and her partner Mike. They run a farm called Purple Frog Gardens, and you know that there is no way that Steve is missing out on seeing that farm. We made plans to visit tomorrow.

Later, we had dinner at Buffalo Cafe, and Steve had "buffaloaf" because...well...meatloaf and buffalo.

Tomorrow's plan is to wake up at the crack of dawn (pre-dawn, actually) and get up to Glacier National park and do the Road to the Sun.
